Visiting Dent Island
A while ago I went on the Hamilton Island Golf Club tour. It was a free activity, booked directly with the golf club, and suitable for children. It is a self drive tour around the course, guided by one of the staff.
Following the tour I was talking with the restaurant team about access to the island outside of the golf. They outlined five different ways to include a visit to Dent Island on a Hamilton Island holiday.
First, and most obvious, is to play a round! Both 9 and 18 hole options are available and Callaway X-22 or FT clubs are available for hire. There is also an Aquatic Golf Driving Range on the island close by the practice green.
The Hamilton Island Golf Pro is available give private or small group lessons. Families can improve their skills with Family Golf Clinics which are held at the course during the school holidays.
The Club House restaurant is the perfect spot for a long lunch. The tables on the deck are my favourite, with views over Dent Passage to Hamilton and the other Whitsunday Islands. Combine a bottle of Riesling with a three course lunch, peaceful surrounds, views to die for…it is the perfect addition to a relaxation holiday. Besides, if you miss the ferry on the half hour, the only option is to sit back and enjoy yourself while you wait for the next one. Bookings are essential for lunch, and include a complimentary ferry crossing.
Finally, there is the Dent Dash. This monthly event is usually held on the first Sunday of the month (though this can change – check the Hamilton Island website for details). It is a 10.6km or 4.2km run/walk around the buggy paths of Dent Island. Runner, walkers and family groups are welcome to participate, and the morning ends with breakfast at the club rooms. The next Dent Island Dash coincides with the Hamilton Island Triathlon, on November 20. The ferry for this event leaves at 06:15am. Tickets are available from the Tour Desk at the Resort Outrigger Centre.
Dent Island Tips:
- Hamilton Island Golf Club has a dress code that includes collared shirts and tailored shorts and trousers, and excludes denim, beachwear, thongs (jandals) and sandals.
- The Dent Island Ferry departs Hamilton Island on the hour, and departs Dent Island on the half hour.
