Had the absolute pleasure to go paddling this morning in one of the Hamilton Island Outrigger Canoe Club six-man canoes with a crew of five island staff. The official sunrise was at ten-to-six we were on the water 15 min ahead of that. It was just lovely. There was a red glow on the horizon as I left the house at 5:20, the air was clear, the island was quiet. The tide was out and the water in the Marina was still.
I have been paddling for a few years now. During the last Hamilton Island Outrigger Cup (Now know as the Battle of the Paddles) I treated myself to a new steering paddle and had a great time this morning giving it a run. We headed out of the marina and north to Pebble Beach. We had to push against the current as the tide was coming in. We took off across Dent passage and snuck around the marker at the top of Dent Island before shooting back across to the marina.
As I drove home with jelly arms I saw runners and cyclists and the odd early starter. The island was beginning to wake up. We’ll continue exploring the Whitsundays by water tomorrow.
