It seems that every school holidays has a birthday party at our house and these holidays were no exception. Instead of another epic water-bomb fight, we elected to take a group of boys to Kegel Bowling.

So there we were, with a dozen lads, a Minecraft themed birthday cake, and slushies on tap. Heaven for 8 year olds! Kegel bowling is different from 10 pin – for a start, there are only 9 of them! The balls are smaller but the gap between the pins is bigger – strength and speed aren’t a huge advantage here (thankfully!).

The biggest difference I find is that there are many different mini-games to play instead of just the straight 10 pin style ‘add up the points’. The horse race is a favourite (the more pins you get, the faster your horse goes), and my favourite game of 3′s (where you add up the fallen pins unless you get a three, in which case you lose points). That’s not to say that I am any good at it… The shorter games keep the kids interested for longer, and there are skill games to keep older bowlers going.

The Kegel Bowling Alley is open from 12.30pm – 10pm at the Resort Centre, close to a lot of Hamilton Island accommodation. There is a licensed bar, snacks and arcade games – and air conditioning (if our perfect weather is just too much for you!).
