Leigh Gordon Art Class
Leigh Gordon has exhibited in New York, Paris, London and in Naples, but for three weeks she is the artist in residence on Hamilton Island. I popped along for one of her Art Classes and had a great time creating a landscape using a few great tips and tricks.
Leigh’s canvases are very evocative of the Whitsundays, and while I do love her turtles, I thought a more easily achieved seascape was the way to go. Leigh was great, taking time with each student, encouraging and guiding us towards good decisions in form and composition.
I used to paint, many, many years ago and I found this a fantastic way to gently break myself back into things. Another student was on her third class in a row and a third was crafter but had never painted.
The room itself is thick with inspiration, from the gorgeous view across the marina to the pieces on the walls by Leigh herself and other artists who visit and teach such as Greg Wardle & Trevor Platt. Located within the Hamilton Island Art Gallery, there is plenty of eye-candy to get you well enthused.
The final result was not too shabby, and has taken pride of place on a corner table at home (that’s it, beside the turtle!). There was a lovely buzz from the whole class as we walked out with our masterpieces ready to go. I can’t wait for the next class opportunity, and the kids are demanding their own class. Fortunately the Gallery and its resident artists hold adults and kids classes – just be sure to book in advance as places go quickly, especially during school holiday time when the island is full of families on holiday with the kids !
