HM Awards Success
I was only one member of the Hamilton Island community excited to be at the Sydney Town Hall attending the 2012 HM (Hotel Management) Awards. There were nine others at the table eagerly awaiting the results for the 12 categories that Hamilton Island was finalists in, with another 1000 awaiting text messages in the north.
We weren’t disappointed. qualia walked away with a hat-trick of trophies, for Best Resort, Best Day Spa (for the second year running) and Best Hotel Chef for Alastair Waddell. qualia also received several Highly Commended awards, including for Luxury Property, Australian Lodge, Hotel Restaurant (Long Pavilion) and Hotel of the Year.
qualia wasn’t the only Hamilton Island Accommodation up for awards, with the Reef View Hotel being a finalist in the Conference Accommodation category. Hamilton Island’s environmental initiatives were also acknowledged in the Environmental Program category.
It was equally exciting to have four finalists in People Awards: Michael Shah (Australian General Manager), Joanne Wilkinson (Highly Commended for Communications Associate), Adele Henry (Front Office Associate) and Alastair Waddell (Winner for Hotel Chef).
The night was capped off by the Oatley family being inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame, recognised for their significant contribution to the tourism industry through the ongoing investment in, and development of, Hamilton Island.
Sandy Oatley acknowledged the honour and said, on behalf of the Oatley family, that “Our vision for Hamilton Island was, and continues to be, that it is an Island for everyone. We’re blessed that it continues to be recognised as such. With the 10th anniversary of ownership of Hamilton Island coming up next year, it is very special to receive this award”.
