Books From Birth
During another conversation with Pam from the Hamilton Island Medical Centre I mentioned that I was in the process of clearing out the Hamilton Island State School library of titles that were no longer needed due to a recent donation of books. At this point Pam asked if I believed in serendipity and I smiled.
The reason being that the Whitsundays ZONTA group was running a new project called Books from Birth, which collects, sorts, covers, and sends the books to various destinations in remote Queensland and Northern Territory communities. Many of the Hamilton Island State School books are destined for a new Women’s Resource Centre on Bikerton Island, East Arnhem Land (a gift from one island to another island being rather appropriate). The project aims to send approx 100 books a month to different communities.
As the 18 boxes of books were about to depart Hamilton Island courtesy of Fantasea Adventure Cruising, we received a call from the Hamilton Island Staff Activities & Events Coordinator, Ake, who runs the Hamilton Island staff library – he also had titles for the Books from Birth project. So another six boxes of children’s books joined the Fantasea manifest and as we speak are on their way north.
