ANZAC Day

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. (Photo: Hamilton Island Photography)
My first ANZAC Day on Hamilton Island was lovely – a beautiful service and a beautiful sunrise in a beautiful location. The Dawn Service was attended by several hundred people, staff, residents and guests, at the Outrigger Function Centre overlooking Catseye Bay. As dawn started to break over the Whitsundays, the Catafalque Party from RAAF Base Townsville stood watch. And as the sun rose, and the leaders of Hamilton Island State School completed The Ode, Rainer Saville played the Last Post and the Reveille.

It was a privilege to hear from FLTLT Kayrn Charles OIC and SGT Sharyn Smyth from RAAF Townsville, and Graham Wyatt from Whitsunday Airlie Beach RSL. I was proud of our students and the role they played. It was lovely to see our community come together in this way.

ANZAC Day this year was poignant for me as I had gathered photos of all the service men and women in our family together for the first time. Putting faces to names made the sacrifices and realities of those who served much more real.
Lest we forget.
