The Hamilton Island website describes Hamilton Island as the major events capital of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s hard to argue with that:
- 6 May 2012 – Hilly Half Marathon, for individuals, teams and kids
- 13 May 2012 – Mother’s Day Classic, a fun run or walk raising money for breast cancer research
- 14-18 June 2012 – Gatorade Hamilton Island Paddling Event, one of the finest events of the outrigger canoeing calendar, and now in partnership with Surf Lifesaving Australia
- 6-8 July 2012 – Great Barrier Feast with Guillaume Brahimi, a weekend of divine food at the divine qualia
- 29 July-3 August 2012 – AWAY the Art of Photography, a week of hands-on workshops with great Australian photographers
- 17-25 August 2012 – Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, from serious offshore racing to onshore glitz, glamour and gourmet fare
- 9-11 November 2012 – Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon & Ocean Swim, four challenging events held over two days including the Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim
- 16-18 November 2012 – Pas de Deux in Paradise with the Royal Australian Ballet
- 13-20 December 2012 – SB3 World Championships, fast technical sailing by some of the best yachties in the world.
Oh, and we’ve organised the whales to visit in September…

Hello, we are chartering a yacht from Airlie Beach from Sunday 26 August – straight after the Hamilton Island race week. From past experience do you happen to know how “busy” the Whitsunday’s will be…? Does everyone still hang around cruising or take off?
Appreciate your thoughts.
Kind regards
Kylie

Hi Kylie, I’m not sure how busy it will be but you could probably also post this question at the race week forum.http://www.hamiltonislandraceweek.com.au/forum
